Urban Ware exhibits at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2008
Find us at Stand TR8

There is not greater goal for any garden-related company than to be able to showcase its designs and expertise at the world’s greatest garden show – the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. And there is no greater pleasure than to have a design accepted as a first time applicant – in this case for the category at the show.

A sustainable-sourced garden retreat
>So it is with much pleasure, and no small amount of trepidation, that we, at Urbanware, have found ourselves in this position for the 2008 show. The ‘Quilted Velvet Garden’ – sponsored by SCA Tissue Europe, Europe’s largest private forest owner, with forests managed to FSC standards – is a sustainable-sourced garden retreat that has been designed to stir the imagination and provide visitors with an escape from the stresses of everyday life.

Escher-inspired design
A place for relaxing and entertaining, it was inspired, in part, by the designs of M C Escher, an artist from the 1900s best known for his play on perspective. Based around Escher’s infinity symbol, the garden incorporates elements of fun and discovery in the overall design, and provides a place where the mind and eyes can wander.

The garden features a dramatic flowing main structure that will act as a brise-soleil, shading the entrance and easing the transition from indoors to out. It also contains a giant planting trough, sculpture, hidden storage and encloses a raised seating area. The entire structure is planted with swathes of assorted blue grasses and highlighting plants, while mature specimen trees will add to the vertical interest and provide welcome dappled shade.

A waterfall emerges from the wall and plunges into a seemingly bottomless pool surrounded by a selection of water-loving plants. The flooring is made up of tiles made from 100% rubber.

Maritime and mountainous planting
The planting for the garden, chosen in collaboration with Peter Biggs of Wanborough Nursery, is chosen for its suitability for maritime and mountainous environments, which are both equally exposed to winds and strong light. Year-round interest has been provided by shape, a limited colour palette and texture. As part of Urbanware’s environmentally friendly commitment, plants are watered via an irrigation system that uses collected rainwater

Supporting local British business
In line with Urbanware’s ethos of creating inspiring yet sustainable gardens in any location, each of the garden elements – from the planters, the plants and trees, and the furniture to the juices and beers used to help dress the stand – have been created by British craftsmen, many located within a 15 mile radius of Urbanware’s premises.

“We are very excited about unveiling the Quilted Garden”, admits Urbanware’s director, James Towillis. “Being part of the greatest flower show in the world is the realisation of a long-held dream. It has provided us with the ideal opportunity not only to showcase our products, but to spread the message of the ever-increasing importance of creating green spaces in an increasingly urbanized world. And doing so in a sustainable, carbon neutral and responsible way.

At Urbanware, we firmly believe that it is essential to the life and health of human beings to have a place to be in contact with nature; a place to revitalise ourselves wherever we live. We hope that that our garden at Chelsea will provide the spark for many more inspirational gardens in our cities and brown spaces.” The Quilted Garden will be at stand TR8 in the small gardens section of the show from 19th – 24th May 2008.
